Hopedale Destination Imagination is an organization created to support the students and volunteers involved in our community's Destination Imagination program. Read more about what Destination Imagination is and how you can get involved. 


Destination Imagination (DI) is a non-profit, volunteer-led, cause-driven organization. It is a place for children to showcase their creativity and originality, while learning important life-skills about teamwork, innovation, time management and the creative process. Each year, Destination Imagination offers seven new standards-based Challenges in STEM, Improv, Visual Arts, Service Learning, and Early Learning. Teams from around the world each choose one Challenge to work on over the course of several months and then present at an annual Regional Tournament. Each Challenge enables student teams to learn and experience the creative process from imagination to innovation.


Each year, 200,000 students worldwide participate in Destination Imagination. Here in Hopedale, we proudly send anywhere between 8-10 teams to our Regional Tournament each year. It is our goal to have as many Hopedale children participate in our program as possible. In order for children to participate they must form a team of between 2-7 students and be led by a Team Manager (an adult volunteer). If you're interested in becoming a Team Manager click here


Children may participate from grade Kindergarten-12th (and beyond in a special University Level program). 


Students in Kindergarten-2nd Grade are called "Rising Stars" and a have a special, simpler, non-competitive challenge specifically designed for them that focuses on either a science or social studies topic. Rising Star teams present at Regionals, but not at a competitive level.


Students in 3rd-12th Grade can select one of the other six challenges to work on in the months leading up to the Regional Tournament.They present at Regionals and have the opportunity to advance to the State Tournament, and then maybe move on to Globals in Tennessee!



Each year we have more children interested in joining teams than we do spaces available. To guarantee that your child has a team to join, volunteer as the Team Manager. We can help you build a team or you can build your own team. If you're unable to manage a team on your own, consider searching for another adult to be your Co-Manager and share the responsibility with you. If these are not options for you, let us know and we will make every effort to find a team for your child. It is our hope that all children have a team to join! 


There are fees to participate in Destination Imagination. These fees are set by the State Affiliate and the National Destination Imagination Organization. These fees are subject to change each year, but in general the cost is between $50-80 per person (depending on how many students are on a team). Additional costs, shared by the team, include materials to create the solution and snacks for weekly meetings. Contact us to hear what the fees cover and to determine the exact cost for your team. Please let us know if someone on your team needs financial assistance in order to participate.

The Experience


Students who participate in DI learn to focus and think creatively and critically by developing their solutions through the Creative Process. DI participants learn how to self-assess and become better at understanding their strengths and working on their weaknesses. 

The relationship between the Team Members and the Team Manager is an important one. According to research, children and adolescents' beliefs about themselves and their abilities are shaped by the extent to which they perceive that the adults in their lives care about them and are involved in their lives. Children and teens who feel supported by important adults in their lives are likely to be more engaged in school and learning. Students are more likely to engage in healthy behaviors and succeed academically when they are engaged in school and feel connected (CDC on School Connectedness and Strategies for Increasing Protective Factors Among Youth).
